The Auto Glass Association (AGA) submitted detailed feedback to the proposed introduction of new repair classes and qualifications, along with amendments to existing repair classes under the Motor Vehicle and Repairs Regulation 2014 in NSW.
Overview of AGA’s Feedback on Current Proposals
A key focus of our feedback was on Proposal 4, which introduces the Level 1 EV Depower and Reinitialize Repair Class. This class is essential for tradespersons in specified repair classes to obtain certification to perform repairs on electric vehicles (EVs). AGA supports the inclusion of the Level 1 EV Depower and Reinitialize repair class for essential trades such as automotive electricians, body makers, and several others crucial to our industry.
However, we have raised critical concerns that need addressing:
Inclusion of Auto Glass Class: Our feedback highlighted that the proposal does not explicitly mention the Auto Glass Class of Repair Work. Given that our technicians often work near systems integrated with Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), found commonly in EVs, it is imperative that they receive proper training in EV-specific safety protocols to mitigate any risks.
ADAS Training Needs:
Our submission pointed out that the proposal overlooks the impact of vehicle depowering on ADAS. These systems play a crucial role in modern vehicles, and improper handling during the depowering process could lead to serious malfunctions or safety issues.
ADAS Calibration in Auto Glass Class:
We have recommended that ADAS calibration work be explicitly included within the Auto Glass Class of Repair to ensure the correct functionality and safety of these systems post-repair or replacement.
Certification Needs: We stressed the importance of Cert II in Automotive Body Repair Technology for new entrants and Cert III in Automotive Glazing Technology for comprehensive training.
Bridging for ADAS Upskilling: We proposed tailored bridging programs to enhance existing knowledge and integrate new competencies related to ADAS calibration.
- Certification Pathways and Skills Recognition
- Our feedback also emphasized the need for:
- Advocacy for Inclusion on Skills Shortage Lists
We underscored the critical yet underrecognizsed skills and roles of auto glaziers, proposing efforts to include Auto Glaziers on the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL) to effectively address the skills shortage and ensure sustainable workforce development.
Conclusion and Call to Action
AGA supports the proposed changes under Proposal 4, with specific recommendations to ensure comprehensive coverage for auto glass repair work and proper handling of ADAS. By addressing these gaps, we aim to enhance the safety and efficiency of EV repair work and prepare all relevant trades for the evolving automotive landscape.
We appreciate your continued support as we advocate for these essential changes to better meet the needs and recognition of our industry.
